Nestled on a four-acre hillside in the Lower Adirondacks, “Not Easy Being Green” brought to life the vision of a NYC-based artist and gallerist seeking a serene and environmentally conscious studio retreat. The design–by Balzer & Tuck Architecture–features a tight building envelope that minimizes air leaks, enhanced by high R-value insulation and geothermal heating and cooling for optimal energy efficiency. Large south-facing triple-paned sliding doors invite abundant light and warmth, while deep overhangs provide shaded protection. The layout includes a bedroom, bathroom, and kitchenette, crafted with careful attention to sustainable practices. Reclaimed barn wood from the 1800s was used for the exterior siding, while the minimalist landscaping features drought-tolerant native plantings, reflecting a commitment to sustainability and allowing the artist to work comfortably while drawing inspiration from the natural surroundings.
