Fancy a Cuppa?

Longtime owners of a stately 1897 Victorian in Saratoga Springs were eager to update their kitchen, pantry, and adjoining sitting area in a style befitting their home’s historic bones. With slight tweaks to the existing floorplan, new custom cabinetry throughout, state-of-the-art Thermador appliances, and a bright blue-and-white color scheme—inspired by the homeowners’ beloved chinoiserie and stovetop teapot—the entire space was revived and enhanced.

Keeping to the kitchen’s original long, narrow footprint, the galley style was updated for improved function and added seating. Relocating the refrigerator to the butler’s pantry permitted better design and traffic flow. Inset cabinetry from Housewright in a custom white finish features antique brass and crystal hardware. Brass accents are repeated in the wire grille upper door inserts—ideal for showcasing that prized porcelain—as well as plumbing fixtures and appliance pulls. Copious white quartz countertops provide plenty of beautiful yet durable prep space, complemented by the serene cerulean backsplash tile. Seating at the eat-at peninsula is supplemented by the built-in banquette, a clever carve-out that creates a snug, color-filled niche.

Oversized crown moulding, specially made to top the tall wall cabinets, seamlessly integrates new with old, where original millwork was salvaged and retained. Original built-ins at the butler’s pantry received a 21st-century reset with a painstaking refinish, new antique-styled hardware, resecured shelves, and retrofitted integrated lighting. Wood floors were likewise rejuvenated, unifying the spaces with a timeless warmth.
